The Canton Township Police Department coordinates with the Michigan State Police to keep the statewide registry current. Any change to a registered address, vehicle, phone number, or email must be reported within three business days. Changes to employer or school information also require in-person reporting. Some updates, like vehicle changes or new phone numbers, can be submitted by mail or drop-off at the department.

The initial registration fee is $50 under state law. The annual verification fee is another $50, with a lifetime cap of $550. Of each payment, $30 goes to a state fund and $20 goes to the registering agency. Offenders with financial hardship can request a 90-day fee waiver. If the local department is not available, registration can also be done at any Michigan State Police post.

Note: Any offender planning to move out of Michigan must report the move to their registration agency at least three business days before leaving. Moving out of the country requires 21 days' advance notice.

Michigan SORA: Tiers and Requirements

Michigan's Sex Offenders Registration Act, at MCL 28.721 et seq., has been the legal framework for sex offender registration in Michigan since 1994. It was substantially amended in 2021. The law assigns every registered offender to one of three tiers based on their offense. Tier I covers lower-risk offenses and requires 15 years of registration with one verification per year. Tier II covers mid-range offenses and requires 25 years with two verifications per year. Tier III covers the most serious offenses and requires lifetime registration with quarterly in-person verification.

Canton Township offenders appear on the same public registry as all other Michigan offenders. Michigan has around 45,000 registered sex offenders statewide. Failure to verify on time is treated as a violation under MCL 28.729. A missed verification is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail. A failure to register at all is a felony, with first-offense penalties of up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Repeat violations carry higher penalties.

Certain offenders may become eligible to leave the registry early. Tier I offenders can petition after 10 years under MCL 28.728c if they have completed their sentence and supervision and have no new convictions. Tier II offenders must wait 25 years. Petitions are filed in the circuit court of the original conviction. A hearing is scheduled after the prosecutor is served with notice. If the court approves, the Michigan State Police removes the person from the registry.
