How to Find Ann Arbor Sex Offenders
The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry at mspsor.com/Home/Search is the main tool. Enter a name, a Washtenaw County address, or the Ann Arbor zip code to search. The radius option lets you check 0.25 to 5 miles from any point. Results include the registrant's photo, address, tier level, offense, physical details, tattoos or marks, and vehicle data. All searches are free and public.
Because Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan, offenders enrolled in or employed at the university must report that information. The registry shows campus enrollment data when applicable under MCL 28.728. If you want to check for registered sex offenders near the University of Michigan campus, use the address-based radius search with a 0.5 or 1-mile radius centered on the campus address.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office also provides local sex offender registry information and works with AAPD to keep county records current. Sheriff's office data flows into the statewide PSOR database.
The Michigan State Police PSOR homepage provides access to all Washtenaw County registrants and has a link to set up email alerts for address changes near you.
Use the Michigan PSOR to find sex offenders near any Ann Arbor address, including residential areas and the University of Michigan campus.
Michigan SORA and Ann Arbor Offenders
Michigan's Sex Offenders Registration Act at MCL 28.721 et seq governs all Ann Arbor registrants. The law was first passed in 1994 and has been amended many times since. The three-tier system sets registration length and verification frequency based on the offense of conviction. Ann Arbor registrants, like all Michigan registrants, fall into one of three tiers.
Tier I covers less serious offenses and requires 15 years of registration with annual verification. This tier includes Criminal Sexual Conduct 4th Degree against an adult under MCL 750.520e and possession of child sexually abusive material under MCL 750.145c4. Tier II applies to mid-level offenses. These registrants stay on the list for 25 years and verify every six months. Crimes like CSC 2nd Degree and child sexually abusive activity distribution fall here. Tier III covers the most serious offenses with lifetime registration and quarterly verification. This tier includes CSC 1st Degree under MCL 750.520b, CSC 3rd Degree under MCL 750.520d, and kidnapping involving a minor under MCL 750.349.
Tier I offenders who have served at least 10 years on the registry may petition for removal under MCL 28.728c. The petition goes to the circuit court where the conviction happened. In Washtenaw County cases, that is the Washtenaw County Circuit Court in Ann Arbor. The court sets a hearing and reviews a Michigan State Police report before deciding.
Note: In October 2024, a federal judge ruled some parts of SORA unconstitutional. About 17,000 offenders statewide may see changes to their registration tier or period as a result. This includes some Ann Arbor registrants.
