Search Wexford County Sex Offender Records

The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry search tool is the main public resource for looking up registered sex offenders in Wexford County. The search is free. You can filter by county, city, or zip code, or run a name search directly. Each result shows the registrant's current address, photo, vehicle details, and the offense that led to their registration. Wexford County is a smaller rural county, so the total registrant count is lower than in larger urban counties, but the registry is still maintained and updated on the same state schedule.

All PSOR data is updated within three business days when a registrant reports a change. That requirement comes from MCL 28.725 and applies to any address change, new vehicle, new school enrollment, or new work location. The state-run registry is the same system used in every Michigan county, so the search process is the same whether you are looking in Wexford or Wayne County.

The Michigan State Police maintains an additional search tool through the PSOR website. The image below links to the PSOR homepage, where you can begin a Wexford County search by selecting the county filter.

Wexford County Sheriff's Office Registration

The Wexford County Sheriff's Office is the designated local registration authority under Michigan law. The office is located at 820 S. Carmel St., Cadillac, MI 49601. The main phone number is (231) 779-9211. You can find additional department information at wexfordsheriff.org. Sheriff Trent Taylor leads the department.

All sex offenders who are required to register under Michigan law must appear in person at the Sheriff's Office. Registration cannot be completed by mail or online. You need a government-issued photo ID, proof of your current Wexford County address, and vehicle information. Initial registration must happen within three business days of moving to the county or establishing a work or school presence here. That deadline is set by MCL 28.723.

The same three-day window applies any time you need to update your registration. Address changes, new vehicle additions, changes to where you work or go to school, and any other updates covered under MCL 28.725 all trigger an in-person reporting requirement. Failing to show up within that window is a felony offense.

Note: Baker College operates a campus in Cadillac. Students at that campus who are required to register must do so with the Wexford County Sheriff's Department, which serves as the local registration agency for the area.

Michigan Registration Tiers and Wexford County

Michigan's Sex Offenders Registration Act uses a three-tier system under MCL 28.725a. Every registrant in Wexford County falls into one of these three tiers based on their conviction offense. The Wexford County Sheriff's Office applies the tier set by state law and has no authority to change it.

Tier I covers lower-level offenses, such as fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct under MCL 750.520e. These registrants verify once per year and stay on the registry for 15 years. Tier II addresses mid-level offenses, including second-degree criminal sexual conduct under MCL 750.520c. Tier II registrants verify every six months and remain on the registry for 25 years. Tier III is the most serious category, covering crimes like first-degree criminal sexual conduct under MCL 750.520b. Tier III registrants must verify quarterly and are on the public registry for life.

Registration fees are $50 at initial registration and $50 per year for annual renewals. Michigan caps the lifetime total at $550. These fees are set by state statute and apply in Wexford County the same as everywhere else in Michigan.

Michigan Law and Wexford County Compliance

Michigan's Sex Offenders Registration Act, starting at MCL 28.721, is the state law that governs all registration requirements in Wexford County. It sets out who must register, how often to report, and what penalties follow non-compliance. The law is the same across all 83 Michigan counties.

Under MCL 28.729, failing to register or update required information is a felony. A first offense can lead to up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine. A second offense raises those limits to seven years and $10,000. A third or subsequent violation can result in ten years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Local prosecutors in Wexford County handle these cases, and enforcement is taken seriously even in smaller counties.

Registrants who move within Wexford County must still report the change within three business days. Those leaving the county must notify the Wexford County Sheriff and then register in their new county. Registrants moving out of Michigan must do the same and then register in their new home state. MCL 28.728 covers what information must be recorded and kept current. MCL 28.728c addresses residency restrictions that apply to certain registrants depending on proximity to schools, parks, and other designated areas.

Other Record Tools for Wexford County

Beyond the PSOR, several other state tools are useful for Wexford County research. The Michigan Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS), run by the Michigan Department of Corrections, shows whether a person is currently on parole or probation in Michigan. If you know someone recently left state prison and may be living in the Cadillac area, OTIS is a quick and free check.

The Michigan ICHAT tool costs $10 per search and returns felony and misdemeanor conviction records from across the state. It is not limited to sex offenses. When the PSOR turns up nothing but you still have concerns, ICHAT can fill in the gaps. It covers a much broader range of criminal history than the sex offender registry alone.

Court case records for Wexford County can be searched through MiCOURT Case Search. The 28th Circuit Court handles felony matters for the county. District court records are also searchable through the same portal. These court records are separate from the PSOR but can confirm conviction details that explain why someone appears on the registry.

For questions or to report non-compliance, contact the Michigan State Police SOR Unit at (517) 241-1806 or email psors@michigan.gov. You can also use the PSOR contact page for registry-specific issues.
