The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry is the go-to resource for finding registered sex offenders in Iron County. The search is free and available to anyone without creating an account. You can search by a person's name if you know who you are looking for, or by zip code or street address to see who is registered near a particular location. The county filter will pull up all active Iron County registrants at once.

Iron County is a small Upper Peninsula county with a population of roughly 12,000. The number of active sex offender registrants is modest relative to more populated Michigan counties, but the registry captures all of them. Each listing shows the person's full name, a current photo, their home address and any secondary addresses, vehicle information, and the offense category that required registration. The tier level is also shown in each result.

The PSOR is hosted by the Michigan State Police. The image below is from the OTIS system, which is a related state tool for tracking individuals under Department of Corrections supervision.

OTIS and the PSOR are maintained by separate state agencies but together provide a complete picture of registered sex offenders and supervised offenders across all Michigan counties.

Iron County Registration Process

All sex offender registration in Iron County must be done in person at the Iron County Sheriff's Office, located at 2 S. 6th St., Crystal Falls, MI 49920. The main phone is 906-875-0650, and the fax is 906-875-0667. You must bring a government-issued photo ID, proof of your current address, and vehicle information when you come in to register. Michigan does not allow online or mail registration.

The state law governing registration is Michigan's Sex Offenders Registration Act, starting at MCL 28.721. Under MCL 28.723, a person convicted of a qualifying sex offense must register before or immediately upon release from custody, or within three business days of moving to Michigan or changing their Iron County address. Changes to address, vehicles, online identifiers, or school and work location must also be reported in person within three business days under MCL 28.725. There are no exceptions to this timeline at any tier level.

The cost to register is $50 at the initial visit and $50 at each annual renewal. The lifetime maximum under state law is $550. Failing to register or to update required information is a felony under MCL 28.729. A first offense can bring up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Second and third offenses carry higher penalties, up to ten years and $10,000 for a third or later violation.

Tier Levels in Iron County

Michigan uses a three-tier system for sex offender registration, established under MCL 28.725a. Tier I is for lower-level offenses. Criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree under MCL 750.520e is one example. Tier I registrants verify once a year and remain on the registry for 15 years. Tier II covers mid-level offenses like criminal sexual conduct in the second degree under MCL 750.520c. Tier II registrants verify every six months and remain listed for 25 years.

Tier III applies to the most serious sex crimes, including first-degree criminal sexual conduct under MCL 750.520b. These offenses involve penetration and serious aggravating circumstances such as a victim under 13 years of age, use of a weapon, or the offender holding a position of authority over the victim. Tier III registrants verify every three months and remain on the public registry for life. The Michigan State Police sets tier levels at registration based on the offense of conviction. Iron County's Sheriff's Office implements the law but does not set or modify tier classifications.

Note: All three tiers carry the same in-person update requirements and the same felony penalties for non-compliance.

The Michigan Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS) tracks all individuals under Michigan Department of Corrections supervision, including parolees and probationers in Iron County. To report compliance concerns or suspected registration violations, contact the Iron County Sheriff at 906-875-0650, the Michigan State Police SOR Unit at (517) 241-1806, or by email at psors@michigan.gov. The PSOR contact form is also available for submitting questions or concerns to the state team.

Michigan Sex Offender Registry Overview

Michigan has roughly 45,000 active registered sex offenders statewide. Iron County's small population means only a modest number of those registrants are located in the county. But even in a small rural county, the Michigan PSOR captures all active registrations and presents them to the public for free. The registry is run entirely by the Michigan State Police and draws data from registration records submitted by county sheriff's offices like the one in Crystal Falls.

The Michigan State Police sex offender registration page offers background on how the registration program works, including how offenders are assigned tiers, what information is collected, and what the public can and cannot see. The PSOR does not show information about offenders who have completed their registration period and been removed from the public list.
